Arriving Safe and Sound

The Holidays can be a stressful time for a lot of people. With the traveling, in-laws, gifts, cooking, and all the endless cleaning, things can get quite hectic. However, with a little preparation you can eliminate a lot of those stressors.

As much as we at Blaine Bowen would love to cook and clean for you, sadly, we can not. So instead, we have compiled a list of traveling tips that are sure to take a lot stress out of your Holiday commute.

If you are driving

  1. Leave early. There is nothing worse than running around and worrying that you will be late. Speeding is never the answer!
  2. Don’t overpack. We want you to get wherever you are going safely. That means being able to see out the back of your car and rearview mirror. Make sure your windows are clear of any obstructions.
  3. Remember your GPS and cellphone. No one enjoys getting lost.
  4. Use a traffic app such as Waze or Google maps to search for the quickest routes.
  5. Find cheap gas with GasBuddy or Waze.
  6. Follow the rules of the road.
  7. Pack a few snacks for the ride. Snacking on something can make the ride seem less monotonous.
  8. Pack a car safety kit. You can find a lot of safety kits online or in stores, but here is a website that will give you a list of good options to include in your own kit.
  9. Find out when the best and worst times to drive are here.
  10. Use caution in work zones. Drive slow and stay smart.
  11. Take breaks. If you are driving with other people create a schedule when everyone will drive so no one gets worn out while driving in bad conditions.

If you are flying

  1. Again, leave early. The airport can be very stressful if you are running late. Make sure to arrive early to ensure that you do not miss your flight.
  2. Don’t overpack. Luggage is getting expensive and you don’t want to be slammed with an outrageous fee if your bag weighs too much. If you are prone to overpacking, Amazon offers many handheld luggage scales you can purchase.
  3. Remember your cellphone and charger. Airports offer phone chargers for purchase, but they may cost you an arm and a leg.
  4. Pack a few snacks. You are able to bring food through TSA, but leave the water bottle at home.
  5. It is flue season so make sure to bring hand sanitizer or anti-bacterial wipes. Remember, your luggage is touched by a ton of people, protect yourself!
  6. Know your airport. To avoid adding extra stress and time to your travel schedule, familiarize yourself with your airport. Try and find your terminal and gate ahead of time and know the quickest way to get to it.
  7. Consider TSA Pre-check. By far the best money I have ever spent on travel! I am TSA Pre-checked and it makes security a breeze! To find out more about the TSA Pre-check process click here.

Thankful Thursday

“Be thankful for all the good.  Each day you have is a blessing from God…

ENJOY LIFE.”-Anonymous

Hello Nuggets!

We’re switching things up a little bit this ‘BB Thankful Thursday’, due to the increase in sad and disturbing events taking place around the world.  We put our ‘common sense caps’ on today, and decided that hiding an unmarked-random package in a public place would be beyond dumb.  Recent events have sparked a lot of interesting and valuable conversations amongst my friends and family, which gave me honest perspective on what I am thankful for.

I am thankful of course for my family, friends and my health.  However, I think something we all take for granted every day is being thankful for our Freedom and opportunities.  I am thankful for military troops and their families that keep us safe, and their sacrifices in order to allow the rest of us to be truly free.  I am thankful to, currently, be able to say what I want and have my own views.  I am thankful to be a woman who started and owns her own business…a right that many women could only dream about.  I am thankful for the idea and hopes of a brighter future for our World, and doing everything I possibly can to leave a positive mark during my time here.

This brings me to our new ‘Pay It Forward Collection’ product…our ‘Bit of Change’ Penny necklaces with 18k rose gold-filled chain , and our Macrame ‘Bit of Change’ bracelets.  These hand stamped pennies will be able to be stamped with ‘Change’, ‘Be The Change’ or ‘Lucky’.  You’ll have your choice of the following organizations you’d like your purchase to benefit:

(Note: We are not affiliated with any of the below organizations)

Military Working Dog Program

Wounded Warrior Project

Throwing a Friendsgiving Party

Thanksgiving is less than 10 days away, are you planning on throwing a Friendsgiving party? This nifty little party is just like a family Thanksgiving gathering, but instead of your in-laws, cousins, and grandparents, you celebrate with your friends!

If you are toying with the idea and need a little help on how to prepare, then we have you covered! Below we have compiled a list of Friendsgiving must-haves, decorating ideas, recipes, and helpful hints for throwing your first, or maybe tenth, Friendsgiving celebration!

Friendsgiving

From top left to bottom right

  1. Create a fun backdrop to take photos with friends. You can purchase disposable cameras or use your phone. We promise the pictures will be an amazing way to document all your festive fun.
  2. You don’t need to break the bank in order to create Fall decorations. If you find leaves outside you can spray paint them, add glitter, and hang! Suspend them from the ceiling with yarn, ribbon, or twine to add a festive, fall look to any room.
  3. Hollowing out a few pumpkins and gourds can turn a simple tea light into a stunning center piece. Find out how to make these pumpkin candle holders here.
  4. Who doesn’t love Thanksgiving leftovers? Create fun ‘to-go’ containers for your guests to pack some leftovers after the party. They will get an easy meal at home and you won’t be stuck trying to eat it all!
  5. Looking for a show stopping desert? Check out this recipe for Pumpkin Cheesecake Bites!
  6. Have your guests write down what they are thankful for and hang it on a Thankful Tree. Find out how to make this festive tree here.
  7. Props are always a good idea for any photo booth. You can purchase fun props or print your own here.
  8. Everyone loves fortune cookies, but have you heard of thankful rolls? Similar to the fortune cookie, thankful rolls have a little surprise message baked right into them. Click here to find out more about this nifty idea!

Introducing Holiday 2015

Math isn’t always everyone’s favorite subject in school. The lines, position of lines and shapes make geometry a confusing and dizzy subject. But in fashion, the same shapes and lines turn into a beautiful, tessellating statement. Geometric patterns can be minimalistic or wild, and in the new Holiday 2015 collection, Blaine has created a balance that is the best of both worlds. Let the lines of this collection bring to life the magic of the winter season. Get lost in the sparkles as they reflect off enchanting metals. Layer these dainty beauties with larger geometrics to turn an outfit from careful to courageous or wear them alone for an effortlessly fashionable look.

Trust us, wearing geometrics is easier than any math problem you’ve ever solved.

Halloween has come and gone leaving a trail of empty candy wrappers in its wake. Did you take part in this candy overconsumption? We all know those wonderfully, delicious treats aren’t good for us, but from time to time who doesn’t indulge in one, or three, or seven?

To help you come down from your sugar high we have compiled a list of sugar facts and body cleansing ideas. Hopefully, with the help of this information we won’t lose ourselves in the Holiday goodies yet to come!!

America’s Favorite Candy

Let’s start off by looking at what each state’s favorite Halloween candy was this year. The Influencer, an online product review platform, surveyed over 40,000 people and found that Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups were America’s favorite candy. What does your state look for in their candy buckets? Find out here.

Not so Fun Size

Are you curious what the sugar count in your favorite ‘Fun Size’ Halloween goody is? Check it out here! There is nothing ‘fun’ about these statistics…

Addictive?!

Did you know, sugar is 8 times more addictive than COCANE?! No wonder the candy bucket is emptied faster than E! creates a new reality show. Have you ever wondered why this is? Click here to learn 10 reasons why we are addicted to this sweet substance.

FLC Syndrome

What is FLC Syndrome you may ask? It’s definitely something I have dealt with and probably the majority of readers too; Feel Like Crap Syndrome. FLC Syndrome has symptoms including gas, joint and muscle pain, reflux, mood problems, and allergy symptoms. If you experience these symptoms or are just looking to be a little healthier try Dr. Hyman’s 10 day detox. You can find the Doctor’s article here and read up on 10 amazing tips and reasons why you should take part in a 10-day sugar detox.

Be Prepared

One of the best ways to make sure you stick to a clean eating plan is to have healthy snacks prepared. I always keep a packet of crackers with me when I go to work or I’m running errands. However, after learning about hidden sugar, sadly, my “healthy” cracker snack has been put to shame. Here are some healthy quick snack options found in Dr. Hyman’s Emergency Food Pack. You can keep some of these items in your purse, desk, or even your car so you’re never be caught off guard when hunger strikes.
