Fireworks & Furry Friends

Blaine Bowen is an animal friendly environment. We have three lovely, furry friends to keep us company throughout the day. With the upcoming holiday just around the corner, fireworks are sure to be heard all over the United States. Here are some ideas on what to do if your dog is frightened by the sound of fireworks, and here are some recipes for tasty, homemade doggie treats to help ease their nerves!

SAFETY AND CALMING TIPS FOR DOGS DURING FIREWORKS:

  1. Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise earlier in the day.
  2. Keep your dogs inside during fireworks, preferably with human companionship. If it’s hot, air conditioning will help. Bringing your dogs to a fireworks display is never a good idea.
  3. Provide a safe place inside for your dogs to retreat. When scared of sounds they can’t orient, dogs often prefer small enclosed areas. If your dog is comfortable in a crate, that is a good option.
  4. If possible, keep the windows and curtains closed. Covering the crate or lowering the blinds can also be helpful. Removing visual stimulation can also help calm dogs.
  5. Make sure all your dogs are wearing ID tags with a properly fitting collar. Dogs have been known to become Houdini around the 4th of July.
  6. Leave your dog something fun to do – like a frozen Kong filled with his favorite treats.

We hope that these recipes and tips will keep your canine friend safe and at peace. After all, they are a member of the family as well!

Red, White, & Blue Strawberry Cheesecake Bites

Screen Shot 2016-06-28 at 11.46.41 AM

Ingredients

  • 10 large strawberries
  • 40 blueberries
  • 4 oz. cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 c. confectioner’s sugar
  • 1/8 to 1/4 tsp. almond extract

Directions

  1. Place softened cream cheese, confectioner’s sugar, and almond extract in a small bowl; stir until well combined and smooth. Chill for about 10 to 15 minutes.
  2. While cream cheese mixture chills, rinse strawberries and pat dry with paper towels. Leaving leaves on, slice each strawberry in half lengthwise and set aside on a plate or serving platter with the cut side up. {If strawberry halves do not sit level on the platter, cut a very tiny slice from the rounded side of the berry half to create a flat spot for it to sit upon.}
  3. Spoon cream cheese mixture into a piping bag fitted with a large star tip. {If you don’t have a piping bag, you can use a zip-top baggie. Cut off one of the bottom corners of the bag and use it to pipe through.} Pipe cream cheese mixture onto each of the strawberry halves.
  4. Top each strawberry half with two blueberries. Serve immediately or refrigerate for up to about 3 hours.

Red,White, and Blue Deviled Eggs

Screen Shot 2016-06-28 at 12.01.49 PM

Ingredients

  • 1 dozen hard boiled eggs
  • ¼ cup non fat plain yogurt (or desired amount)
  • 1 tablespoon mayonaise ( I prefer Hellman’s/ Best Foods)
  • ½ teaspoon dry mustard
  • salt & pepper
  • Americolor Food coloring (red and blue)

Materials

  • Piping bag

Directions

  1. Cut eggs in half and take out yolks and place them in a medium bowl.
  2. Use a pastry cutter or fork to break up yolk until it’s super fine.
  3. Add yogurt, mayo, mustard, s&p and whip up with spatula until smooth and creamy.
  4. Place mixture into piping bag fitted with a 2D tip.
  5. Mix 1 cup hot water and 1 teaspoon Americolor food coloring and 1 teaspoon vinegar. The vinegar helps the color stay bright, I tried it both ways and the eggs with vinegar have a brighter color.
  6. Place egg whites into the colored water and let sit until desired color is achieved about 1-2 minutes.
  7. Take out egg whites and place on paper towel to allow excess color to drip off.
  8. Then arrange eggs on platter.
  9. Pipe the egg yolk mixture into the egg white halves.

Caprese Salad Skewers

Screen Shot 2016-06-28 at 3.43.31 PM

Ingredients
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Mozzarella balls
  • Fresh Basil
  • Olive Oil
  • 1 cup balsamic vinegar
  • salt and pepper

Materials

  • Medium-sized toothpicks

Directions

  1. Assemble, tomatoes, basil (roll from one end to the other), and mozzarella balls on medium-sized toothpicks. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  2. To make balsamic glaze, add one cup of balsamic vinegar to a sauce pan over medium heat. Once it comes to a boil, set on simmer for about 10-15 minutes until it reduces to a syrup consistency. You can check by dipping a spoon in the balsamic and if it covers the back of it, it’s done. As it cools, it will thicken a bit more then drizzle on top of caprese salad skewers.

Longest Day of the Year

June 20th is the official first day of summer! Known as the summer solstice, this day is also known as the “longest day of the year”. Although this day falls on a Monday, here are some ideas on how to celebrate SUMMER, SUMMER, SUMMERTIIIIME!

If you happen to have the day off or your work day ends at 5pm or 6pm, throw an evening pool party! The day is cooling off, and you can enjoy drinks and food by the pool:

Virgin Sangria Punch

Condiments

  • 1 tbsp Lime juice, fresh

Berry Lemonade Popsicles

Screen Shot 2016-06-16 at 1.34.20 PM

yield: 10+ POPSICLES

total time: FREEZE OVERNIGHT

Will need: a pitcher, popsicle molds

Ingredients:

  • Country Time Berry Lemonade Starter
  • Water
  • Strawberries, sliced
  • Blueberries

Directions:

  1. Pour 3/4 cup of Country Time Berry Lemonade Starter mix into a pitcher.
  2. Fill the pitcher with 7 and 1/4 cups cold water. Stir to combine.
  3. Add a few sliced strawberries and blueberries to each popsicle mold.
  4. Fill each popsicle mold with the berry lemonade.
  5. Place the top on the popsicle mold and insert popsicle sticks.
  6. Freeze the popsicles overnight.
  7. To get the popsicles to release from the mold, fill your kitchen sink with room temperature water. Place the mold in the water, making sure the water does not go above the top of the mold.
  8. Allow the mold to sit in the water for a few seconds.
  9. Begin to wiggle a popsicle free. If it feels tough, allow them to set in the water a few more seconds.
  10. Once all of the popsicles are removed from the mold, enjoy or wrap the extras in plastic wrap and return to the freezer.

YUM! Another thing you can do, although you may want to start this over the weekend, is summer cleaning! We are midway through the year, so it is time to update that wardrobe, revamp your living space, and get ready for the next 6 months:

But there is only so much that you can do on a Monday! If you have partied all weekend long, still exhausted from spending time with your father, or just had a long day at work, you can always just RELAX! Read a book, binge watch on Netflix or Hulu, have a cup of tea, or have a nice soak!

Bring on the heat and have fun!
